Peltola Scandal Driving Alaska Turnout

Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, told Newsmax on Monday that Alaskans are furious over reports that his Democrat opponent's campaign was involved in efforts to recruit another candidate named Dan Sullivan to confuse voters in Tuesday's election and that the issue is driving voter turnout.

"The voting turnout is huge. And in part it's because Alaskans are seeing that Mary Peltola is completely corrupt," Sullivan told "The Record With Greta Van Susteren."

"What she has done with Chuck Schumer, as reported in detail by The New York Times, is one of the most corrupt things, certainly the most corrupt thing we've ever seen in Alaskan politics."

Sullivan accused Peltola's campaign and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., of conspiring to recruit a candidate with a nearly identical name to his to siphon Republican votes in Alaska's ranked-choice election.

"They got a decoy candidate on the ballot. The whole thing reeks of disdain for the Alaskan people, Alaskan voters," he said.

The scandal centers on Dan J. Sullivan, a Republican candidate whose name closely resembles that of the incumbent, Dan S. Sullivan.

The Department of Justice sued to prevent Alaska from certifying election results if the incumbent loses, arguing that the candidacy could confuse voters. A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit Sunday, two days before the election.

Sen. Sullivan said the issue has energized voters as he campaigns across Alaska.

"I'll tell you this, the Alaskan people are furious. I am seeing giant turnout at my rallies," he said.

"Do not let Schumer and Peltola steal your vote. It's exactly what they wanted to do."

Sen. Sullivan also disputed reports that Peltola had only limited knowledge of the alleged recruitment effort.

"They actually didn't say that at all. They said Peltola absolutely knew about this scheme," he said, referring to the Times' report.

He accused senior Peltola aides of receiving regular updates from Schumer's team and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

"Peltola is saying she didn't know anything about it," Sen. Sullivan said, adding that he is concentrating on winning reelection.

"I'm not focused on the legal issues right now. We have the FBI," he said.

"We have federal prosecutors. They're going to find out who's guilty, who's not guilty going forward."

Sen. Sullivan said Alaska media had not adequately covered the story.

"I don't think they dug into this enough," he said. "I think this is just the tip of the iceberg, what's happening now in Alaska."
